ASUU always in revolving motion...
By Abdullahi O Haruna Haruspice

You do same thing perennially and expect different result, that isn't gonna happen because for every action there is a corresponding result. I grew from infancy knowing ASUU for one thing; deprecating strike actions! Like annual plague, this academic body has consistently used one weapon to get their demands- downtool! Tragically, this age long tactics have never fetch them any meaningful result. They keep recycling this same template of unionism.

In this clime, we see ourselves as not part of the Nigerian project but mere employees. We fight everyday for personal greatness and not society's emancipation. Everyone is on the fast lane of individual conquest, forgetting that no nation attain greatness where the people are not united in common philosophy.

The Nigeria's situation is a pathetic reality, we have almost a fratured system . There is no institution that is not near comatose. Our institutions are barely surviving on luck and happenstance. Instead of coming together to address this choking realities, we all move on in different voyages struggling for personal survival.

ASUU has every right to downtool given the sorrowful decay in our educational institutions but is strike action the solution?  This tool of demand has yielded no result for centuries, why resort to same model to agitate for your rights?  This is time for the cerebral gentlemen of the academics to become creative. Strike has become outdated, obsolete and primitive. Bring forth new ways of addressing grievances. Using students as bargaining chips is calous, insensitive and inhuman.

You can't build better society when you toy with the future of your youths. Subjecting them to chess pawn to get to government is akin to killing your 1 year old baby because your wife is carrying a new pregnancy. Devise ways at reaching the government without halting the educational pursuits of your students.

The government is as confused as ASUU because they both have no clue on how to manage the crisis in our universities. And you can't blame anyone here because we are collectively wired to decieve ourselves instead of deliberate efforts to find solutions to our problems.

For ASUU, suspend your strike action and devise more effective way of holding government to it's jugular. Stop punishing the people because you want to get at the  government that don't care really.

Return to classly musing.
