How to tell if you're going to break up, according to a psychologist who's studied couples for decades

How to tell if you're going to break up, according to a psychologist who's studied couples for decades
Have you ever been in the middle of a heated argument when the other person suddenly pulls out their phone and starts texting?
This behavior, known as stonewalling, fits into a category that marriage therapist John Gottman has identified as one of four signs a couple is headed for a breakup.
Gottman is a psychology professor at the University of Washington and has been studying couples for decades.
Gottman and University of California Berkeley psychologist Robert Levenson spent 14 years studying 79 married American couples to find out what — if anything — those who divorced had in common.

1. Contempt

Contempt alone, Gottman told Business Insider, is "the kiss of death" for a relationship. He described the behavior as a virulent mix of anger and disgust that's far more toxic than simple frustration or negativity. It involves seeing your partner as beneath you, rather than as an equal.

The reason contempt is so powerful, Gottman said, is because it means you have closed yourself off to your partner's needs and emotions.
If you constantly feel smarter than, better than, or more sensitive than your significant other, you're less likely see his or her opinions as valid. And more importantly, you're far less willing to put yourself in his or her shoes and try to see a situation from his or her perspective.
To combat this behavior, partners need to be open to seeing things from the other's point of view.

2. Criticism

Like contempt, criticism involves taking something your partner did and turning into a statement about their character or the type of person he or she is.
Say your partner has a habit of leaving used dishes around the house. Do you calmly tell them that the behavior bothers you, or do you think to yourself, "Why am I dating the type of person who is so careless that they leave their dishes everywhere?" If you're in the latter category, Gottman said these reactions can feed darker feelings of resentment and contempt.
The next time you find yourself criticizing your partner's character, then, perhaps take a moment to question why you're doing it. Are you trying to avoid addressing a bigger issue?

3. Defensiveness

Gottman found that couples who divorce within the first several years of marriage — one of the times when divorce rates are highest — tend to slide easily into emotionally-charged situations.
One partner in these dangerous scenarios, he said, often plays the victim and becomes defensive.
For these couples, "entering negativity is like stepping into a quicksand bog. It's easy to enter but hard to exit," Gottman said.
To avoid a situation like this, he advised taking responsibility for your role in a tough situation. This can be uncomfortable, but it's often what keeps a bad situation from escalating, he said.

4. Stonewalling

You know when an argument is about to start — you can feel your heart rate increase and your voice get a bit louder. But if things start to get heated, do you walk away or simply ignore your partner?
Blocking off conversation can be just as toxic for a relationship as contempt because it keeps partners from addressing an underlying issue, Gottman said. So if you find yourself shutting down, pause and think about how you can stay open to what your significant other has to say.

The takeaway

Gottman isn't the only researcher to highlight these signs that all is not well with a couple. A recent study of close to 400 newlyweds found that couples who yelled at each other, showed contempt, or shut off conversation about an issue within the first year of marriage were more likely to divorce as far as 16 years down the road.
Still, keep in mind that it's okay to occasionally display one of these behaviors. If get frequent enough to replace more positive interactions, however, that can be cause for concern.
Simply recognizing that you're doing something negative is the first step to combating it. If you can figure out how to avoid a behavior or replace it with a more productive one, you'll probably make your relationship stronger.
In fact, Gottman said that partners in the couples he's studied who succeed in staying in love have both cultivated what he calls "the magic trio": calm (even during conflict), trust, and commitment.
Those traits are essentially the opposite of the "four horsemen," and they involve building a safe haven with your significant other — a place where you feel comfortable, nurtured, and free to express yourself without fear of retribution. Gottman likened the idea to the actor Tom Hanks' monologue about his late wife in the movie "Sleepless in Seattle."
"Hanks says something like — meeting her was like finally coming to 'a home, but a home I had never known before,'" Gottman said.

See the 6 things you can start doing when you cant get a job yet....[ a must see]

Being unable to get a job is not the end of the world. It’s important to keep pushing and not let frustration consume you. There a number of things you can do to survive and eventually overcome a period of unemployment.
Here are 6 things to do when you can’t get a job.
Consider Unpaid Internships or Volunteer Work
It might be difficult, but if you find that you can’t get a paid full-time job, you can apply to firms for unpaid internships or NGOs for volunteer work. Companies and NGOs will most likely yield to this and offer you an internship position which can help you gain some experience rather than just sitting idle. The experience gained can then qualify you for a higher level position when you decide to end the internship and return to the job market to continue your search. In some cases, for unpaid internships, if the company is impressed with your work as an intern, they can offer you a paid and more permanent position in the firm. Internships and volunteer work are great ways to get your foot in the door at a company or firm and learn some new skills, as well as gain some experience in the process.
Consider Selling Crafts or Offering Your Services
If you’re a crafty person (you like to make and invent things), you can try to sell some of your crafts. There are many online platforms, as well local craft fairs, that support this and if the patronage is good, you can actually turn it into a business. The same thing also applies to services. You can try to find work doing various tasks that you are either skilled at or passionate about. If the reception is also good and patronage is reasonably high, you can begin to advertise your services and make it a business. If the business continues to do well, you can also consider searching for entrepreneurial development initiatives and apply to them to help fund and grow your business in the long run. Bank loans are also another alternative, if you prefer.
Network
Networking can be a bit difficult, but thankfully it can be learned and can be very useful in helping secure a job. So, do the best you can to attend events that offer networking opportunities. Work on selling yourself appropriately at these events because networking remains one of the best ways to meet new people and get new leads. Also, be sure to ‘spruce’ your online presence and ensure it is up-to-date, professional and easily accessible to recruiters and other individuals that are or could be vital to your job search.
Consider Other Industries
If you’ve tried and failed to find a job in the industry that you’re interested in, consider looking for jobs in other industries. It might not be exactly what you want, but it’s better than wallowing in frustration. Besides, you just might realize you actually enjoy this new career field and grow exponentially in it. You’ll never know until you give it a shot.
Review Your Resume (CV)
You might have made a mistake on your resume that turns recruiters off when they go through it. So, if you’re finding it hard to get a job, try reviewing your resume again. Check your resume for correct grammar and spelling, emphasize the results you achieved in your previous jobs, not just the activities you carried out, and write better cover letters. In addition, when you are eventually called in for an interview, learn to practice interviewing, research well about the company and be prepared to answer any question. Find ways to project confidence during interviews and to properly deal with instances where you might not know the answer to a question asked. Finally, just be positive, don’t let your frustrations come through and don’t undersell yourself – boldly state your accomplishment regardless of how small you think they are and give them good reasons why you’re the best fit for the job.
Don’t Stop Applying For Jobs
It might be frustrating but once you have reviewed your resume and you’re good to go, you should continue with your job applications. The best thing you can do to survive a period of unemployment is to apply for as many jobs as you can, and apply for them as well as you can. You can also consider applying for lower paying jobs in the meantime, just to get some money to help put food on your table until you have a breakthrough with the caliber of jobs you desire.

5 IMPORTANT DAYS THAT COULD HELP STRENGTHEN YOUR RELATIONSHIP

To be truthful, our relationship necessarily does not have to be worked upon or strengthened by special occasions since it is expected of us to get to build and strengthen our relationship on a daily basis.
However, here are those important days whose remembrance could help you foster a healthier and a stronger relationship with your spouse, friends and relatives.
BIRTHDAYS
Birthdays are special days for every one of us; we get a sense of acknowledging being birthed into the world and this has an emotional touch on us, following  our willingness to make that day a memorable one by staying in touch with friends and family who sends us very special messages to help celeb our day.
THE FIRST DAY YOU MET WITH YOUR SPOUSE
While others have considered their first meeting with their spouse an unforgettable one, others have found it very easy to forget.
Some try to put up various forms of impression on their first meeting, thus, making it extremely difficult for you to really get to know who you are dealing with.
However, these habit patterns becomes obvious later on and might not be much of a problem if it doesn’t tamper so much with your relationship nevertheless, if it does, this could put your relationship in jeopardy with you having to deal with some emotional repression.
WEDDING DAY
Of course, this special occasion is just once in a lifetime and everyone hopes to keep this day memorable by ensuring that everything works out well as planned. We often want to keep this day perfect not putting in mind that nothing in life is perfect.
This is not to say that you should be less optimistic about how your special day would be but being prepared to handle certain disappointments when they come up would place you a safe side.
WORST MOMENT OR DAY IN YOUR RELATIONSHIP
You’ll get to learn a whole lot from this day and this would give an idea how to relate with your spouse knowing fully well certain things that were previously hidden from you, it will help you know how best to relate with your spouse and would keep you on the edge of making certain decisions that would determine the turnouts of your union.
ANNIVERSARY
Wedding anniversaries are amazing with couples getting to renew their vows; this tells a lot more about your union. This absolutely does not mean that those who failed to celebrate wedding anniversaries have also failed in their marriages but it could be termed a result of forgetfulness or being busy.
Getting to renew your vows helps to keep your relationship refreshed and strengthened.
Having in mind the memory of these special days will help you both to retrace your steps if you’ve not been so much on the track.

5 steps to improving your chances of finding the right mate...

5 steps to improving your chances of finding the right mate...
It’s seven o’clock in the evening and you are all excited because you met someone earlier in the day that you are about to go out on a date with. The suspense builds until you finally meet at a local restaurant. Once you get separated you start talking about each your day and the significant events that each of you had and so on. The evening proceeds great and you look forward to going out with this person again.
After a few more dinner dates you decide that you would like to go to the annual home and patio show coming to town this weekend. You ask your new friend if about going and you notice a hesitant response but he agrees to go with you so you can be together. After that response you kind of feel strange about going to the home and patio show if your friend is not going to enjoy himself. You do not want to be selfish just because you are interested in different things you can do to spruce up a home that does not mean that everyone else is. So you change your mind and ask your mate what he would rather to do this weekend and he says that he would just like to hang around the house and relax after the hectic week he has just had. He just needs a rest. You, on the other hand, feel that you would relax and enjoy the home and patio show to help you unwind from your week at work, but to keep him happy you decide to stay home. You start to think about the relationship and how you like having someone in your life, but you realize that something is missing.
There is just an emptiness that you just can not put your finger on. You especially felt it when he started talking about marriage and having a family with you. Thoughts began to rush through your mind that sort of conflicted with each other like the fact that it is great to be with someone and you would not have to worry about being alone and risking not finding someone to love and love you back. But, you know that there is just something missing in this relationship that is hard to pin point. After all, he has a great job and makes a lot of money and he wants to have a family what more could I want you ask. So what if he does not really like doing many of the things that you like to do. Perhaps those are immature things anyway you think as you try to justify dismissing what you like to do in favor of what he likes to do. You try to justify the fact that all he likes to do on weekends is sleep late and watch TV, something that bores you to death, is really not such a bad thing and you can get used to it, etc ..After speaking with many happily married people I noticed five common exercises that they all have in common:

1) They never got physically involved with each other until after they were married which allowed them to date each other and really get to know what each other on a level level than they otherwise would have been able to.
2) They met initially doing something that they liked to do. They never used a dating service or any other means of an artificial meeting. By meeting each other doing something that they both enjoyed helped to bond their relationship from the start.
3) Realizing that every day is not a good day for everyone they keep each other their space if one was a little grouchy. Hey, sometimes you just wake up on the wrong side of the bad for no real reason. They were secure enough in their relationship not to think that the grouchiness was about them.
4) They worked together and supported each other so that they could each realize their dreams. The wife of one of the couples really wanted to go back to school to become a physician but because of the expense it was a challenge. They both sat down and came up with a plan to make it work so she could realize her dreams. They had to sacrifice for a few years but in the long run it was worth it to them to work together and help each other be happy.

THE MAIN REASON WHY GUYS CHEAT..(must read..dont miss)
The MAIN reason guys cheat is…
According to a new survey, the TOP reason why guys cheat is, quote, “the other person was really hot.”
And the number two reason is that the other person may or may not have been hot, but they WERE hitting on him and showing him interest. You have to get to number three before you find guys who cheated because of doubts about their relationship.
It’s different for women. The number one reason they cheat is because their significant other stopped paying attention to them, and the number two reason is because the other person was really there for them.
The survey also found both men and women are most likely to cheat with a friend, a coworker, or someone they randomly meet when they’re out.
